Library to Lend Out Seeds

Our Horticultural Society is partnering with Halton Hills Public Library to help them launch their new Seed Library. This is a public library-led initiative in which seeds are ‘borrowed’ by community members, free of charge, from a shared seed repository. The library also encourages the return or donation of seeds harvested from plants grown from ‘borrowed’ seed in order to promote sustainability, improve local biodiversity, and foster a sense of shared community.

“This initiative will provide access to free herb, fruit, vegetable and flower seeds that will promote our community’s sustainability initiatives,” says Lee Puddephatt, Community Librarian.

Part of our Society’s contribution to this initiative will be to hold a seminar, led by Lil and Diana, at the Library on Saturday, August 18 at 10:00 am to help people recognize when seeds are ripe, how to harvest, clean, package and store them. Also covered will be how long particular seeds remain viable and how and when to start the more difficult perennial herbs and flowers.

Participating community members will take home packets of seeds to plant in their own gardens next spring with the request to return harvested seeds to the Library in the fall.

Centennial Ideas
The Georgetown Horticultural Society is celebrating it's 100th anniversary in 2020! Though that may seem like a long way off, we'd like to get the ball rolling or the grass seed planted as they say...
If you have any ideas, please click on the link and let us know.

Members of the Society only please.
